Bicycle recycling project Bikestop has long placed fascinating bicycles with stylish riders. We restore authentic vintage bikes and give them a home where they’ll be treasured. On Sunday, we invite you to line them up to celebrate cycling history, and create a bit of history of our own. The inaugural Buttonhole Run takes to the streets!
Taking inspiration from The Tweed Run in London and the Eroica rides in Italy and around the world, The Buttonhole Run brings together vintage culture, unique bicycles and friendly people for a Grand Day Out in the best of British Tradition.
It’s a ride where all riders, styles of dress and types of bicycle are welcomed and expected. The theme uniting all our riders will be a love of retro and vintage, and a buttonhole flower arrangement on their lapel.
We roll out from our shop in Skinnergate at 11am on Sunday for a sedate tour of the area, wih an appropriate refreshement stop thrown in. The route will be suitable for all, accompanied, as we are, by at least one penny farthing, a 1950s style American Cruiser, several Dutch town bikes and the amazing Daisy Bell bicycle (more of which below).
We will return to the shop to take tea and cakes provided by the delightful Olive Stone Bakery. We’ll share stories, relax and make merry to tunes of the time. It will be all wrapped up by 3pm.
A Dress Code: Your look should be your own, with a nod to history. Tweed is the perfect autumn cycling material. It breathes and repels poor weather equally well. We encourage you to include some if you are able. There is no similarly practical mantra for petticoat wearing, but your humble author can confirm they are surprisingly warm, especially when coupled with high-denier nylons. Prizes will be awarded by our discerning judges for “Best Turned Out Rider” and “Best Bicycle”
Finally, two of our riders Belinda and Paul of Cycle in Company have set the standard for unique and innovative bicycles on the ride, embracing as they have in this short video both the creativity and history we hope to attract in true silent-movie style. Come and meet them on the day.
So, dust off your bicycle! Iron your tweeds and fluff your petticoats. Darlington’s first ever tweed-themed ride is upon us!
